PSITTACIFORMES: Cacatuidae
Cacatua galerita
A hole in a tree trunk about six metres up from the ground had me fascinated, as sprays of wood chips were ejected from it (photo inset).
I suspected that a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo might be doing some home-making inside the tree. The presence of its mate perched on a projection of the trunk near the hole was a big clue.
Sure enough, two minutes later the top of a yellow crest waved into view, followed by the rest of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo as it used its bill to haul itself out of the hole.
